Herodotus does not mention Israel
Herodotus does not mention Israel because Israel did not exist at that time, but why does he mention Palestine though?
Excellent question! Wikipedia: Herodotus … was a Greek historian … and lived in the fifth century BC. At that time The Jewish nation was already ~1,000 years thriving in Judea, the Jewish land. BUT - the Greeks and the Romans later had their own names. They ALSO called the land Palestine, and by that name they referred to the people who lived on that land - namely, the Jews…
When the Romans killed most of the Jews and burnt the land in 135 AD (following 2 revolts by the Jews) - they were so furious at the Jews that they decided to stop calling the land Judea (which was the official name until 135 AD), and start calling the land Palestine so as to try to erase all Jewish memory of the land.
Please see Wikipedia at Judea (Roman province) - Wikipedia.
Please also see Judaea Capta coinage - Wikipedia regarding Roman coins which relate to Judea (the original name of the land).
Back to Herodotus: he did not know the Jewish people well: His acquaintance with them is at best highly superficial, and he considered them to be Syrians who practiced circumcision, which custom they had acquired from the Egyptians… which is of course far from the truth.
So don’t rely on Herodotus at this point.
